Eurogroup for Animals: 'Stop the EU Mercosur Free Trade Agreement'
On 28 June 2019, more than 20 years after negotiations started, the EU and Mercosur countries reached a political agreement on an unprecedented Trade Agreement. For the first time, the EU applied an animal welfare condition to a trade deal: EU-related standards must be applied to preferential imports of shelled eggs from Mercosur. Although this is a significant precedent in trade policy, the deal remains problematic because it foresees large market access for most animal based products from Mercosur countries - such as beef and poultry - without applying any animal welfare or sustainability conditions. The Intergroup discusses the impact of this Free Trade Agreement on agriculture and animals.
