France 24: 'Talking Europe Animal welfare in farming: Europeans demand higher standards'
This week, we're focusing on animal welfare in farming. Here in France, nine out of 10 people declare that animal welfare is important to them and lifestyles are changing too. Two-thirds of French people say they've reduced their overall meat intake, while more people have been eating organic and locally produced food during the Covid-19 pandemic. Right now, questions about intensive farming of animals are becoming even more pressing during the pandemic. This after a mutant form of the coronavirus was found in mink on Danish fur farms, sparking the cull of millions of the animals there.
All this comes as the European Union and its member states are transforming their farming policy.
Today we're asking: is European farming kind enough to animals?
Should standards be changed – and if so, how? What will that cost? And who pays the extra to make it happen?
