Plenary Session: The importance of urban and green infrastructure - European Year of Greener Cities 2022
The importance of urban and green infrastructure - European Year of Greener Cities 2022 (B9-0243/2020)
I voted in favour of this resolution, in line with the Group of the Greens, on the growing importance of green cities, as resilient, self-sufficient and sustainable urban areas that lead to the exponential increase in the quality of life of the respective resident population.
The century-old environmental degradation caused by a myriad of urban activities, such as the use of pesticides and herbicides in urban areas, makes it urgent to rethink the space usage strategy, since careful and thoughtful planning avoids several negative repercussions that often affect the largest urban centers in European countries, as is the case with high levels of pollution, floods and worsening social inequalities, even endangering public health.
Consequently, the recognition of the exacerbated importance of a series of measures that make cities greener constitutes the first step towards changing the paradigm of cities, making them places where people can and want to live with quality of life.
