40 MEPs warn Von Der Leyen over flawed State of the Union speech
Brussels, September 22, 2023 - Francisco Guerreiro MEP, along with 39 other colleagues from four different political groups, sent a letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von Der Leyen, warning that the “Farm to Fork” proposal was not mentioned in the last State of the Union speech.
In May 2020, when presenting its Farm to Fork Strategy, the European Commission committed to a necessary flagship initiative: the Sustainable Food System legislative framework. It was to be the backbone of the F2F Strategy. This proposal was not mentioned in the State of the Union speech, nor is it present in the Letter of Intent.
“This proposal could be the opportunity, beyond our political differences, to finally have a meaningful debate on what a sustainable food system is. This is highly necessary to give a clear direction to the transformation of our agriculture. It could also be an opportunity for farmers and consumers in the midst of the cost of living crisis,” the MEPs lament.
