Bluefin tuna catches documentation program
I voted in favor of the report on the proposal for a regulation establishing a bluefin tuna catch documentation program. The European Union has been a Contracting Party to the International Convention for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (the “ICCAT Convention”) since 1997. The ICCAT Convention establishes a regime for regional cooperation on the conservation and management of tuna and tuna-like species in the Atlantic Ocean and adjacent seas through the creation of an International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (“ICCAT”). This proposal lays down the rules for a Union bluefin tuna catch documentation program in order to implement the conservation and management measures adopted by ICCAT under its bluefin tuna catch documentation program. The latter aims to identify the origin of all bluefin tuna. The new provisions introducing electronic systems, adopted by ICCAT, will improve the quality and reliability of data on the origin of tuna and strengthen the deterrence of illegal fishing.
