EU fertilizer availability
It is high time that the EU emphasized providing resources, incentives and advice to farmers to adopt agro-ecological practices that reduce and eventually largely eliminate costly dependence on synthetic fertilizers and soil and water pollution caused by overuse and nutrient loss. The success story of organic farming in many Member States demonstrates that this change is possible. Topsoil formation, crop rotation including nitrogen-fixing legumes, legume covers and traditional or green manures are affordable alternatives. The use of synthetic fertilizers has a huge cost for the environment, the climate (responsible for 2.1% of global GHGs) and human health, including a high number of deaths due to air pollution. It is also a very energy-intensive sector, using Russian gas or US fracking gas, and with a huge climate impact. Many of the mineral deposits are located in autocratic states and disputed territories (UK, BY, MO, Western Sahara, ...).
