EU priorities for the 68th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women
Women and girls continue to be disproportionately affected by poverty and the risk of social exclusion, particularly those who suffer intersectional forms of discrimination. Ahead of the UN CSW session, we call on the Council and EU Member States to take a unified position and commit to moving towards a feminist foreign policy, to addressing the systemic root causes of women's poverty and to prioritizing investment in all public services and infrastructure.
This resolution is the EP's contribution to the annual UN Commission on the Status of Women, which will take place from March 11 to 22, 2024. A FEMM mission will also travel to New York to present this resolution, organize side events and contribute to the session. The priority theme for its year is “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls, fighting poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective”.
It is estimated that 383 million women and girls live on less than 1.90 dollars a day. Poverty, exclusion, the over-representation of women in low-paid, precarious and part-time jobs, wage and pension disparities, as well as the under-representation of women in political and economic decision-making are the result of the accumulation of systemic problems and structural inequalities and discrimination. Persistent gender stereotypes and harmful social norms still influence the division of labor at home, in education, in the workplace and in society. Crises, including climate change and all the associated consequences, the rising cost of living crisis, pandemics and armed conflicts are not gender neutral and exacerbate social and gender inequalities.
