European Parliament pressures Commission with resolution on future European Green Deal
Brussels, 15 January 2020- The European Parliament approved today, by majority, a resolution that sets out goals and structural commitments for the European Commission's future proposal on the European Green Deal.
The approved resolution urges the European Commission to achieve a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
A resolution that falls short of the proposal by the Greens/European Free Alliance which was 65%, the end of fossil fuel subsidies as early as 2020, the reorientation of European Investment Bank investments towards a transition to 100% clean and renewable energy, and the establishment of binding and ambitious national targets for the renewable energy sector and for energy efficiency.
In the final resolution, the Greens were able to guarantee a commitment to review the legislation around animal welfare and protection.
“We managed to get Parliament to commit itself to reviewing legislation around animal protection and welfare in the context of reducing emissions from the livestock sector,” said MEP Francisco Guerreiro.
It should be noted that all pro-nuclear proposals were linearly rejected by the European Parliament, a strong signal for the European Commission to invest in the 100% clean and renewable energy and industries sector.
“Once again, the conservative view of the big political families stopped the important revision of European agricultural policies, namely through the Common Agricultural Policy, which does not reflect the urgency to protect biodiversity and change the way we produce, distribute and consume food in the Europe,” the MEP concluded.
