Fisheries co-management in the EU
Strasbourg, 9 May 2023 - I voted in favor of this own-initiative report on shared fisheries management in the EU and the contribution of the fisheries sector to the implementation of management measures. This report highlights the opportunities to improve fisheries management at local and regional level through the so-called “co-management” or shared management approach. Shared management means that the community of local resource users and the administration, supported by stakeholders such as scientists and NGOs, share responsibility and authority for the management of fishing activity, while respecting the general rules adopted at EU level. The report calls for this approach to be introduced and supported in any future revisions of the EU's Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).
It is important to strengthen the link, communication and exchange of knowledge between the scientific world, both at biological and socio-economic level, involving fishermen and other workers in the sector in the collection of data and the results of the assessments carried out on the basis of these data, as well as the different administrations, which will be able to gain a better understanding of the functioning of fisheries, in order to strengthen trust between the stakeholders involved in fisheries management.
