Fisheries monitoring
I voted in favor of the proposal for a regulation on fisheries control. The 2009 fisheries control regulation was supposed to be updated to include the latest technological developments and to cover the monitoring of management rules that had changed over the last decade. It turned into a five-year political struggle to combat the rollback of existing rules of fundamental importance and, at the same time, fight for the inclusion of new provisions, however weak they may be. Nevertheless, the result represents a step forward and will globally improve the monitoring and control of fishing activities in EU waters and of EU fishing vessels.
Parliament declared a climate emergency on November 28, 2019 and is fully committed to the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050 at the latest. This implies a change of attitude throughout society, including the fisheries sector. For the measures provided for in the Common Fisheries Policy to have the expected result, it is essential that there is a simple, transparent and effective control system that guarantees effective, uniform and up-to-date compliance with these measures in all EU Member States.
