Francisco Guerreiro signs letter to reduce industrial meat and dairy in the “Farm to Fork” strategy
Lisbon, 29 April 2020 – MEP Francisco Guerreiro (PAN) signed a letter to the European Commission calling for a reduction in industrial meat and dairy production in the “Farm to Fork” strategy, that should be part of a Green recovery plan for Europe.
The letter says that limiting the intake of these products is essential to “ensuring that all Europeans can have a healthy and balanced diet, at a price that is affordable for them and properly rewards our farmers, and that is produced in a way that preserves nature and helps us to deal with the climate emergency”.
This call arose from the concern that animal farming accounts for 12-17% of the EU’s greenhouse gases, and is also one of the biggest drivers of biodiversity loss.
This is an even greater concern now that the world is in the middle of a global pandemic caused by an animal-borne disease. This fact has been firmly linked to the continuing destruction of natural habitats, as people are in greater contact with wild animals and the diseases they carry. Scientists have also warned that intensive, industrialised animal farming provides more chances for new diseases to develop and jump to humans.
