Gender balance among non-executive directors of listed companies
In the EU today, fewer than 1 in 10 CEOs are women. Ten years after the first attempt, the Council has stopped blocking this Directive and together with the EP an agreement has finally been reached on the Women in Senior Management Directive. The renewal of the German government was key to the breakthrough.
For the Greens/EFA, this Directive is a first step towards achieving more gender balance on company boards and a push for greater gender equality in corporate decision-making. In the negotiations with the Council, Parliament managed to close a number of loopholes proposed by the Council's text. However, it is still disappointing that the objectives of this directive (40% of non-executive directors are of the under-represented sex or 33% of non-executive and executive directors combined) are not more ambitious, and we will continue to strive to go further in the future and look at the implementation and progress observed in MS. The Greens/EFA group is therefore committed to promoting gender equality in effective access, participation and influence at all levels of corporate decision-making at the top of the agenda and pushing for more ambition when the Directive is reviewed in 2030. I voted in favor of this resolution.
