Greens/EFA MEPs call on the Portuguese Presidency for more tax justice
Brussels, 27 November 2020 – Twenty one MEPs from the Greens/European Free Alliance, including Francisco Guerreiro, call on the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union to prioritize the legislative proposal on Public Country-by-Country Reporting (CBCR).
In a letter to the Portuguese Prime Minister and the Ministers of Finance and Economic Affairs, the MEPs argue that large multinational corporations continue to conceal where they do business and how much they are paying in tax, despite the introduction of non-public CBCR. In contrast, public CBCR could effectively address the secrecy surrounding multinationals’ activities, providing valuable information.
Public CBCR would also allow people “identify loopholes in the tax system and inform evidence-driven policy making to ensure fair taxation”, write the signatories of this letter.
“It would be a strong signal of Portuguese leadership for tax justice and responsible budget policies in Europe if your Presidency programme would name the conclusion of the country-by-country reporting file as an explicit priority,” the MEPs say.
Portugal will assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from 1 January 2021, and for six months. Know more here.
