MEP calls on better conditions for trainees in the European Parliament
Lisbon, 27 April 2020 – Today, MEP Francisco Guerreiro (PAN) signed a letter to the President of the European Parliament (EP), David Sassoli, urging the institution to give trainees the same conditions as in the Council and the Commission.
Taking into account the situation motivated by the Covid-19 pandemic, trainees from these three institutions who started their internships between February and March 2020 were allowed to do them again in October 2020, hopefully under normal conditions.
Both the European Commission and the European Council have offered their trainees the opportunity to do their traineeship in their home office until that date.
The European Parliament, on the other hand, wants to make it possible to return in October only if the current traineeship is terminated prematurely before 30 April. An early end to the traineeship, however, causes practical and financial problems for many of these trainees, for example because they cannot return to their places of origin and/or cannot continue to pay for their rented accommodation without the salary.
Therefore, the signatories of this letter call on the European Parliament to give its trainees the same conditions as in the European Council and the European Commission.
