MEP Francisco Guerreiro hosts event on aquaculture
Brussels, 26 January 2023 - Last Tuesday, Francisco Guerreiro MEP hosted the event “Towards a more sustainable EU aquaculture”, where the report “Rethinking EU Aquaculture” by Compassion in World Farming EU was presented.
Francisco Guerreiro was also the moderator of the discussion, which was attended by several NGOs, MEPs and the European Commission.
“Aquaculture often comes at the expense of the sustainability of our planet, the welfare of animals and people. Increasing production, as with any other system, is not the way forward. We must avoid environmental damage, as current aquaculture models increase fishing pressure on wild populations. In addition, many aquaculture systems do not adequately address animal welfare issues. We need legal provisions for the protection of farmed aquatic animals this year when the European Commission proposes updated animal welfare legislation,” he commented on his social media accounts.
