MEPs call for an end to the mink industry
Brussels, 12 November 2020- Several MEPs members of the Intergroup on the Welfare and Conservation of Animals sent a letter to Commissioner Kyriakides expressing concern about the spread of a mutant form of SARS-CoV-2 among American minks and calling for an end to this industry in Europe.
In recent weeks, many countries have announced concerted measures to combat this situation, while Denmark ordered the slaughter of the 17 million mink raised on more than 1000 farms in the country after 12 people became infected after contacting with the animals. Spain, Italy, Sweden, and the United States of America are also taking action and this was the reason for the government of the Netherlands to decide to end mink farms now, something which was previously scheduled for 2024.
MEPs therefore call for this example to be followed. Francisco Guerreiro (Greens/EFA), member of the Committee of Inquiry on the Protection of Animals during Transport, is an obvious signatory of this letter.
If you want to join this initiative, you can sign the petition to end the mink industry.
