MEPs question Commission on strategy and action to secure and rebuild Ukraine's energy infrastructure
Brussels, June 12, 2023 - Several MEPs, including Francisco Guerreiro, questioned the European Commission about the measures the EU is taking to ensure the security of Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which is in crisis due to Russia's military actions.
Read the question below:
Subject: Russia's military actions causing a crisis in Ukraine's energy infrastructure
Russian missiles and Iranian drone attacks directed against Ukraine's energy infrastructure have left peaceful citizens and the public and private sectors without electricity. On November 15, 2022, around 10 million people in Ukraine were left without electricity. According to the Ukrainian authorities, more than 30% of the entire energy sector has been destroyed. Large-scale Russian attacks in Ukraine continue and the current energy supply capacity may not be sufficient to provide the population with electricity, heating and drinking water during the winter.
We ask the Commission:
1. What urgent actions have you taken to ensure the security and reconstruction of Ukraine's energy infrastructure?
2. Does the Commission intend to prepare a long-term strategy for financial and technical support for Ukraine's energy infrastructure and establish a coordinated support mechanism between international organizations and member states?
3. Has the Commission considered additional EU sanctions against Russia as a result of the intentional destruction of energy infrastructure and, if so, when would the proposals be made?
