MEPs question the Commission on the possibility of having pets in the buildings of the EU institutions
Brussels, March 23, 2023 - Francisco Guerreiro and other MEPs have questioned the European Commission on the possibility of having pets in the buildings of the EU institutions.
Read the question below:
Subject: Pets in the buildings of EU institutions
Many international companies allow employees to bring pets into the workplace, as the presence of pets in these spaces improves employees' mental health, productivity, confidence and communication, while reducing stress[1].
There is also a link between the health and well-being of animals and people and stray animals. According to research[2], stray animals are a major problem in most European cities. This problem involves significant costs for the competent authorities and therefore requires greater attention.
Despite their undeniable contribution to improving people's well-being, pets are not allowed in any of the EU institutions' buildings.
Since the EU institutions are considered to be at the forefront in terms of personnel policies:
1. Would the Commission consider allowing pets in all or certain areas of its buildings?
2. Would it consider creating spaces with special receptacles and bags that workers could use when taking their pets out?
3. Would you consider encouraging your employees to adopt a stray animal?
