Objection pursuant to Article 112(2) and (3): genetically modified maize MON 87419
We decided to systematically oppose any import authorizations for GMOs after the European Parliament, in October 2015, rejected the Commission's proposal to renationalize, rather than democratize, the import authorization procedure.
The vast majority of GM crops are modified so that they are tolerant to one or more herbicides. This modification allows herbicides to be used to treat weeds throughout the cultivation of the GM crop without it dying, as would be the case with a non-herbicide tolerant crop.
However, the excessive use of these herbicides, especially glyphosate, on GM crops leads to the development of herbicide-resistant weeds.
The heavy reliance on chemical inputs has implications for health, the environment and biodiversity in cultivation countries, and could also pose health risks for consumers in the EU if GM crops are authorized.
