Objection under Rule 112(2) and (3): Genetically modified soybean A5547-127 (ACS-GMØØ6-4) 3 Objection under Rule 112(2) and (3): The 'CMIT/MIT SOLVENT BASED' family of biocidal products
This objection represents the 30th objection linked to the import of genetically modified food and feed that the Greens/EFA group is leading in this legislature. We decided to systematically oppose any import authorizations for GMOs after the European Parliament, in October 2015, rejected the Commission's proposal to renationalize, rather than democratize, the import authorization procedure. The vast majority of GM crops are modified so that they are tolerant to one or more herbicides. This modification allows herbicides to be used to treat weeds throughout the GM crop's cultivation without it dying, as would be the case with a non-herbicide-tolerant crop. However, the excessive use of these herbicides, especially glyphosate, on GM crops leads to the development of herbicide-resistant weeds. The heavy reliance on chemical inputs has implications for health, the environment and biodiversity in cultivation countries, and could also pose health risks for consumers in the EU if GM crops are authorized.
