Plenary Session: Annual report 2018 on the human rights and democracy in the world and the European Union's policy on the matter
Annual report 2018 on the human rights and democracy in the world and the European Union's policy on the matter (A9-0051/2019 - Isabel Wiseler-Lima)
I voted in favour of this resolution which, thanks to the significant contribution of the Greens/EFA group, has managed to cover the global image of human rights and what the EU should do to face voices of dissent and that go against universal values and norms. The report deals with the main trends and challenges, in the year 2018, within the scope of Human Rights and the European Union's policy on this matter.
This document includes a wide range of human rights issues such as those related to freedom of expression, women's rights, climate change or the LGBTI community. It also has a particularly strong preeminence over climate change, biodiversity and environmental crimes.
At the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 2018, the EU underlined the political importance of creating a global order based on respect for human rights and reaffirmed its deep and firm commitment to the promotion and protection of these around the world.
The EU must continue to strive to be the leading global player in the universal promotion and protection of human rights, including multilateral cooperation, a leadership confirmed by this report.
