Plenary Session: Digital Services Act: adapting commercial and civil law rules for commercial entities operating online
Digital Services Act: adapting commercial and civil law rules for commercial entities operating online (A9-0177/2020 - Tiemo Wölken)
I voted in favour of this report as it emphasized the relevance of updating the legislative framework on electronic commerce and respective consumer rights through recommendations in the area of digital services.
European legislation regarding this vector has been in force for two decades and needs to be adapted to the new reality in a prudent way, focusing mainly on certain dimensions, such as the introduction of safeguards with regard to users' privacy, data protection and other fundamental rights; delimitation of the mechanisms for removing illegal content, based on an effective identification and notification system, while ensuring the respective judicial control of these illicit elements and reinforcing the promotion of interoperability components and interconnectivity, allowing users a swift and accessible switch between digital platforms.
Such a reform will allow the consolidation of the single market in the area of digital services, contributing to clarity and transparency in the legal sphere, which will translate into an added value, especially for smaller scale companies, while harmonizing the responsibilities of online platforms and service providers and increasing the supervising indexes of the content policies of these platforms operating in the EU.
