Plenary Session: EU coordinated action to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences
EU coordinated action to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences
I abstained in the final vote on this resolution, in line with the Group of the Greens/EFA.
This resolution, made with the S&D, Renew and EPP groups, has in fact defined strong positions in several essential areas. It calls for an important recovery and reconstruction package to support investment after the crisis. It also reaffirms that the European Green Deal must be at the center of this recovery package, underlining the need for our responses to be in line with our climate objectives.
However, the amendment that was fundamental to us, amendment 15, which called for the mutualisation of debt, was rejected by the plenary. This amendment by the Greens defending the "Eurobonds", considered «essential that, in order to preserve the cohesion of the European Union and the integrity of its monetary union, a substantial share of the debt that will be issued to combat the consequences of the Covid-19 crisis is mutualised at EU level».
For this reason and despite highlighting many important points, we were unable to vote in favour of this resolution. We abstained because we understand that the real added value of it would be this change that was rejected by the right and the liberals.
