Plenary Session: Labelling of tyres: fuel efficiency and other essential parameters
Labelling of tyres: fuel efficiency and other essential parameters (A9-0094/2020 - Henna Virkkunen)
I voted in favour of this agreement on the new tyre labels (EU) as the disclosure to the consumer of important information that will influence their choices is under negotiation. It has been approved that, in the future, information on mileage, abrasion, retreaded tyres and snow/ice adhesion will be added to the labels.
Mileage and abrasion data will be included when a test method is available. Abrasion of tyres during use is a significant source of microplastics and their inclusion in this agreement was a major victory for the Greens/EFA, who have long struggled to obtain this indicator on labels. In addition to these measures, it was also agreed that the labeling should inform consumers about the tyre’s fuel efficiency, wet grip and external noise.
The new labeling will also apply to heavy vehicles, which are currently not covered by EU labeling requirements. The labels must be clearly visible, exposed in all situations where the tyres are being sold, including online, and provide a QR code. The new labeling could lead to a reduction of 10 million tonnes of CO2 emissions and an increase in turnover of € 9 billion in manufacturing.
