Plenary Session: Objection to Genetically modified maize I
Objection pursuant to Rule 112: Genetically modified maize MON 89034 × 1507 × NK603 × DAS-40278-9 and sub-combinations MON 89034 × NK603 × DAS-40278-9, 1507 × NK603 × DAS-40278-9 and NK603 × DAS-40278-9 (B9-0171/2019)
I voted in favour of the objection to the authorization of importing genetically modified maize due to the risks associated with genetically modified organisms (GMOs), namely in terms of health for consumers, animals and the environment.
The vast majority of GM plantations have been modified to become tolerant to one or more herbicides, thus promoting, given the resistance of the plants, a greater use of herbicides. EU consumers do not want a cocktail of toxic waste on their plates and bodies. GMOs have adverse effects on the environment and biodiversity (in addition to those that are still unknown), and several crops are even modified to produce poisonous toxins for certain insects. They are also unnecessary and they disrupt the natural balance of the environment.
Furthermore, my objection is justified by the current lack of democracy that the European Commission has been perpetuating in continuing to authorize GMOs, even though it knows that the European Parliament, vote after vote, has objected to its cultivation within the EU and that there is no qualified majority of Member States in favour.
