Plenary Session: Setting up a subcommittee on tax matters
Setting up a subcommittee on tax matters (B9-0187/2020)
I enthusiastically voted in favour of creating this subcommittee because it is the result of a long struggle by the Group of European Greens to make it a reality. After years and years with Special Committees (TAXE in 2015, TAX2 in 2016 and TAX3 in 2018) and a Committee of Inquiry (PANA in 2017, due to the Panama Papers scandal), we will finally have a permanent structure in the European Parliament that will discuss tax matters and keep political pressure on the European Commission and, above all, the Council.
This subcommittee of the ECON (Committee on Economic and Financial Affairs) will be responsible for all matters related to tax fraud, tax evasion and tax avoidance, and also the rules of transparency in tax matters. Hopefully, it will be an important step in investigating everything that is going wrong in the Union in terms of taxes, fiscal equity, unfair competition and that will help to change the rules in the Council on tax matters, putting an end to the necessary unanimity rule currently in force and that, changing to a qualified majority, we can move towards minimum fiscal harmonization and with standards consistent with the European project.
