Poll: 1.2 million Portuguese are already taking meat off their plates
Brussels, April 3, 2023 - A new market study requested from INTERCAMPUS by independent MEP Francisco Guerreiro, of the Greens/European Free Alliance, has revealed data on the eating habits of the Portuguese population with regard to the plant-based diet. For example, 66% of consumers consider price to be the biggest barrier to consuming alternatives to animal protein.
The study concludes that 88% of those surveyed are omnivores (eat both animal and plant products), more men (91%) than women (84%), and the main reason for doing so is “the pleasure of eating” (72%). On the other hand, women are more likely to follow the flexitarian regime (11% ) than men (6%), with both accounting for 8% of the total in the survey and “prevention and health care” being the main reason for their choice (71%). Respect for animals” is the main reason for opting for a meat-free diet (76%). The study concludes that, over the next six months, 33% of respondents plan to reduce their consumption of animal products, with 55% of those interviewed thinking of replacing meat with vegetable “meat”.
“In the current inflationary climate, it is also essential to have a national strategy for diversifying the production and consumption of plant-based proteins, as these are increasingly consumed by the Portuguese,” says Francisco Guerreiro. “Rather than setting VAT at 0% for these products, the government should guarantee more support for the production, distribution and consumption of these foods,” concluded the MEP.
Also in relation to current national issues, 81% of respondents believe that “constitutions should include the protection of animal welfare”.
With regard to European policies, 56% don't know what the Common Agricultural Policy is. However, 46% are interested in finding out more.
“Considering that around 30% of the European budget goes towards funding the Common Agricultural Policy, it is increasingly important to enlighten the Portuguese about the impact of food production, which is currently quite negative, on public health, ecosystems and animal welfare,” stresses the MEP.
