Renewable Energy, Energy Performance of Buildings and Energy Efficiency Directives: amendments (REPowerEU)
Accelerating the uptake of sustainable renewable energy is essential to ensure the achievement of the targets set out in the European Green Deal, geopolitical and fossil fuel independence in the EU, as well as stimulating prosperity in Member States and regions by creating local green jobs.
This new limited revision of the Renewable Energy Directive, stemming from May's RepoweEU package, aims to simplify and shorten the administrative processes for granting licenses applicable to renewable energy projects, related storage and grid connections to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy in the face of the current energy crisis. In an attempt to simplify licensing, the proposal introduced some derogations from existing environmental rules. For the Greens/EFA, the deployment of renewable energy/climate protection and nature conservation are interlinked crises that can be solved together. In the final vote, I abstained because several points were included in the final text that conflict with the vision of the Greens/EFA group.
