Restoring nature
This law is crucial to saving Europe's nature, which is in poor condition, as scientists, businesses and citizens have warned. Nature is key to mitigating and combating the effects of climate change, contributes to preventing droughts, fires and floods, and is essential for long-term food security as well as farmers' livelihoods. However, it should not be forgotten that the LRN not only aims to protect agricultural ecosystems, but also, among others, urban ecosystems and forests. Furthermore, without the Nature Restoration Act, the EU cannot fulfill its international commitment under the Kunming-Montreal Convention on Biodiversity to restore at least 30% of degraded ecosystems.
Despite the EPP Group's aggressive and unprecedented campaign last summer against the NRL, the EP's position was adopted by a small majority in July 2023. After taking into account many EPP concerns contained in the adopted EP report, the trialogue agreement was approved by a large majority in the ENVI Committee in November 2023 (53 +/28 -/4º). The EPP group was completely divided, with shadow rapporteur Christine Schneider (EPP, DE) voting in favor. After promoting the withdrawal of the Sustainable Use of Pesticides Directive (SUR), which was presented by the Commission on the same day as the NRP, the EPP should at the very least have supported the latter.
I clearly voted in favor.
