Substances which deplete the ozone layer
Thanks to the Montreal Protocol, the use of the chemicals that created the hole in the ozone layer has been banned in almost all relevant applications in the EU and many other regions of the world. As a result, the ozone layer is recovering, but this recovery is fragile. The revised ODS Regulation allows the EU to target global efforts to reduce the use of SDO as a feedstock in chemical processes - a use to which no SDO bans apply and whose emissions are increasing. In addition, following the adoption of the revised SDO Regulation, the EU will also monitor “new” SDOs, i.e. SDOs that are not regulated by the Montreal Protocol but whose emissions have increased in recent years.
