The 2024 European elections. Report: Domènec Ruiz Devesa, Sven Simon (A9-0332/2023)
I voted in favor of this own-initiative report on the 2024 European elections. The aim of this report is to convey Parliament's main political messages to strengthen the European dimension of the organization of the June 2024 elections and the process leading to the election of the President of the Commission. Although the references to Union-wide transnational constituency lists were rejected, it was possible to achieve a solid, pro-European report, which clearly defines the main aspects to be taken into account for the improvement of the European elections and the implementation of the “Spitzenkandidaten” process.
The report regrets that the “head of the list” candidate system was not implemented in 2019, but clearly underlines that the European Parliament needs to coordinate to establish one of the “head of the list” candidates as its candidate for President of the European Commission, who will then be appointed by the European Council. We need a clear correlation between the choice of voters and the election of the President of the Commission.
