The Social Climate Fund
Strasbourg, April 18, 2023 - I voted in favor of this essential report on the proposal for a Regulation establishing the Social Fund for Climate Action. This Regulation is part of the Commission's wider efforts under the European Green Deal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union by 55% in 2030 compared to 1990, and to ensure that every European citizen is able to make this energy transition.
The European Green Deal must also be a social pact. The new Social Fund for Climate Action will therefore support the most disadvantaged families in their efforts to transition from fossil fuels, insulating their homes, switching from fossil to renewable heating and from petrol and diesel cars to more sustainable mobility. The more frugal Member States pushed hard to reduce the size of the Fund (from 18 billion a year in the Commission's proposal to a maximum of 11.6 billion a year in the final agreement), but the Greens/EFA fought hard to ensure that Member States will have to give priority to vulnerable households.
