Toy safety and the repeal of Directive 2009/48/EC
I voted in favor of the report on the proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on the safety of toys. The EU's single market for safe toys has been an important achievement for the protection of children, while removing obstacles to the free movement of toys within the Union, to the benefit of companies, which are mostly small and medium-sized enterprises. However, a significant number of toys on the market are still unsafe and can harm children. This is unacceptable to the Group of the Greens/EFA. For this reason, we are calling for an ambitious regulation on toy safety, which will ensure that our children are safe when playing with these products. For example, the specific safety requirements for chemicals have been updated and strengthened. In particular, the ban on endocrine disruptors, respiratory sensitizers and substances toxic to a particular organ has been added. This is the first time worldwide that chemical substances suspected of being hormone disruptors have been banned for all types of products. We have also included noise limits in the legislation (the Commission left them up to industry), requiring that they no longer exceed those set for adults.
