Union certification framework for carbon removals
Achieving climate neutrality by 2050 at the latest in the Union means that GHG emissions in all sectors of the economy must be reduced to close to zero, and that the remaining unavoidable emissions must only be offset by carbon removal actions. In this context, increasing the amount of CO2 stored and removed by our soils and biomass is fundamental, as long as it is done in a way that also increases biodiversity (i.e. no monospecies afforestation).
The ENVI report corrects some of the main pitfalls of the Commission's proposal, including the fact that all carbon farming activities must demonstrate that they also generate a positive impact on biodiversity, and the fact that certified activities should not be used for offsetting purposes. I voted in favor.
