Brussels, September 3, 2023 - MEP Francisco Guerreiro questioned the European Commission about the feasibility of mandatory microchip identification for dogs and cats bred in commercial breeding facilities.

Subject: Welfare of cats and dogs - identification ( microchip implantation) and registration
Since many EU consumers buy pet dogs and cats bred in another EU Member State, it is essential that the origin of the animal is traceable. This possibility is essential not only to facilitate consumer protection and monitor the potential spread of diseases, but also to enable the investigation of cases of poor welfare conditions. To ensure traceability along the commercial chain, an electronic repeater (microchip) must be inserted and registered in a database before the first transfer of ownership.
Is the Commission prepared to assess the feasibility of mandatory microchip identification for dogs and cats bred in commercial breeding facilities and the registration of the microchip number in an official database together with the owner's data before leaving the breeding facility?
